A variety of competitions in Sanskrit were organised by 
the Samskrita Sahitya Parishad on December 1 and 8 in the city. The 
competitions were conducted in different categories for school and 
college students. A total of 200 students from 10 educational 
institutions (seven schools and three colleges) participated .
The music competition was on Sanskrit Kritis and held on December 1 in four categories. 
Each
 group was allotted two composers and expected to be prepared with one 
kriti of each. Personalities include Muthuswamy Dikshitar, Syama Sastri 
and Jayadeva. All the other competitions were held on December 8.
The
 sloka recitation competition was held in five categories. Students were
 tested on slokas of Adi Shankaracharya and Valmiki among others. In 
drama competition participants were given 15 minutes to enact a drama. 
The essay and elocution competitions were conducted for college 
students. Topics for the essay were ‘salient features of Indian Culture’
 and ‘Kalidasa excels in similes’. The winners will be declared in the 
Parishad’s website in a few days time, said V.Balakrishna Sarma, 
secretary, Samskrita Sahitya Parishad.
