The two-day seminar on the ‘Concept of Biodiversity as reflected in ancient Samskrutham literature’ got underway here on Wednesday. The seminar, organised by the Centre for Vedanta Studies, University of Kerala and held in Kerala University Senate Chamber, is seeing the participation of over a hundred delegates - students of Sanskrit, professors and other scholars - over the course of the two days.
The inauguration was done by N Veeramanikandan, PVC and Vice-Chancellor in-charge, University of Kerala, while the keynote address was delivered by P Pushpangadan, former director, TBGRI.
The first session on ‘Biodiversity in ancient Samskrutham literature’ was addressed by retired space scientist T P Sasikumar, who sought to impress upon the audience that the flow of nature was beyond human control. “It is true that we have a responsibility towards nature, but we should know that we don’t control nature,” he said. “Biodiversity, also, is only a small part of the earth’s systems,” he said.
Other speakers dealt more specifically on aspects of biodiversity in Sanskrit literature - N K Sundareswaran of Calicut University spoke on ‘Biodiversity as reflected in vedic literature’, while K Muthulekshmi of the SSUS, Vanchiyoor spoke on ‘Understanding biodiversity through upanishads.’ On the other hand, the presentation by C R Rajagopal, director, School of Indian Languages, University of Kerala, was on how biodiversity was also reflected in ancient art forms like Koodiyattam through the technique of ‘pakarnnattam.’
Day two of the seminar will see sessions on biodiversity and sustainable development and biodiversity and society. There will also be parallel sessions for delegates’ presentations.
